Trump Declares Iran Ceasefire Over, Says US Will Defend Its Interests and Allies
ANKARA: US President Donald Trump has announced that the ceasefire with Iran is over, reaffirming that the United States will take all necessary measures to protect its interests and allies while insisting that Iran will never be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the NATO summit, Trum’p said the recent US military action against Iran was carried out in response to attacks allegedly launched by Tehran. He claimed the operation was necessary to safeguard American interests and regional allies.
The US president also said that previous understandings with Iran had effectively come to an end, accusing Tehran of wasting time during negotiations. According to Trum’p, Washington’s position on Iran’s nuclear programme is now clear and unwavering.
Trump further claimed that Iran’s military leadership had been eliminated and replaced by new leadership. However, he did not present any evidence to support the assertion, and the claim has not been independently verified.
Reiterating his long-standing position, Trump stressed that Iran would not be permitted to obtain nuclear weapons under any circumstances.
Commenting on NATO, Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the alliance’s current performance, saying member states had not provided the level of support the United States expected regarding Iran. He added that since the US contributes the largest share of NATO’s funding, allied countries should shoulder greater responsibility.
Trump also remarked that while NATO needs the United States more than the US needs NATO, he described his meeting with NATO Secretary General as constructive, saying they discussed several global and regional issues.
When asked about Spain, Trum’p said he was not interested in relations with the country but did not elaborate further.
The US president also accused Iran of destabilising various countries over the past 47 years and sharply criticised the Iranian leadership.
Political analysts believe Trump’s latest remarks indicate that Washington intends to maintain a hardline policy toward Iran, while differences remain within NATO over the alliance’s approach to Tehran.
