Tehran Witnesses Massive Funeral Procession for Former Iranian Supreme Leader Khamenei
Tehran: A state-organised funeral procession for Iran’s former Supreme Leader, Seyyed Ali Khamenei, commenced in Tehran on Monday, drawing large crowds as the country observed a period of national mourning.
State television showed Khamenei’s coffin, covered with the Iranian national flag, moving through the capital on a ceremonial vehicle. The procession also included the coffins of several relatives who, according to Iranian officials, lost their lives during the conflict that began earlier this year.
The funeral route is expected to continue to Mehrabad International Airport, where officials will oversee the next phase of the burial ceremonies.
Iranian authorities introduced heightened security measures throughout Tehran ahead of the event. Major roads were closed to traffic, restrictions were imposed on flights in parts of the capital’s airspace, and many public offices, businesses, and educational institutions remained closed to facilitate the mourning ceremonies.
The funera l is expected to attract mourners from different regions of Iran, reflecting the significance of the occasion in the country’s political and religious landscape. Officials have urged participants to follow security instructions and cooperate with authorities throughout the ceremonies.
