From Gwadar to Gilgit-Baltistan: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Honors Police Force on Martyrs’ Day
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Introduction: A Nation Pays Tribute to Its Brave Guardians

Islamabad – On the solemn occasion of Police Martyrs’ Day, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif delivered a powerful and heartfelt tribute to the courageous men and women of Pakistan’s police force. In a message resonating with national pride and collective memory, the Prime Minister emphasized that from the sunlit shores of Gwadar to the snow-capped peaks of Gilgit-Baltistan, every police officer is the pride of the nation.

His message not only recognized the sacrifices of thousands of police officers who laid down their lives in the line of duty but also appreciated the dedication, professionalism, and resilience shown by Pakistan’s police forces across the country.

Commemorating Police Martyrs’ Day: Honoring the Ultimate Sacrifice

The Significance of Police Martyrs’ Day

Police Martyrs’ Day, observed annually across Pakistan, serves as a day of reflection and national gratitude. It honors the thousands of police officers who have sacrificed their lives to protect citizens, uphold the law, and secure Pakistan against internal and external threats. The day also recognizes the families of the martyrs, who endure immense personal loss for the safety and peace of the nation.

In his message, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif underscored the emotional and moral debt owed to these heroes and their families. “Today we also salute the great families of our martyrs who sacrifice their future for us,” he said.

A Record of Valor: Police Sacrifices in the War Against Terror

Over 8,000 Police Officers Martyred in Line of Duty

Pakistan’s law enforcement agencies, particularly the police, have been at the forefront of the fight against terrorism since the early 2000s. As the Prime Minister pointed out, more than 8,000 police officers and personnel have embraced martyrdom while defending Pakistan from extremist and criminal threats.

These officers were not just names in official records — they were sons, fathers, daughters, and brothers who gave their lives so that millions of Pakistanis could live in peace and freedom. Their sacrifices have been instrumental in preventing countless terror plots, safeguarding public gatherings, and maintaining law and order in even the most volatile regions.

Recent Tragedy in Rahim Yar Khan: The Elite Force’s Sacrifice

Referring to a recent tragic event, the Prime Minister mourned the martyrdom of five elite force soldiers who were killed during an operation against dangerous robbers in Rahim Yar Khan, Punjab. Their bravery and sacrifice symbolize the daily risks that police officers take to protect the public from criminal elements.

“These martyrs, like thousands of others, are our pride,” Shehbaz Sharif said, reflecting a nationwide sentiment of grief, honor, and gratitude.

Pakistan Police on the Global Stage: A Force of Professional Excellence

International Recognition at the World Police Summit 2025

Prime Minister Sharif lauded the professional achievements of Pakistan’s police at the international level. He specifically referred to recent honors received at the World Police Summit 2025, where Pakistani officers were awarded medals and accolades for excellence in policing, counterterrorism, and crisis response.

These honors are a testament to the capability, discipline, and modernized practices of Pakistan’s police forces, who are increasingly being recognized among the world’s leading law enforcement agencies.

Modernizing Policing with Technology and Innovation

In his remarks, the Prime Minister welcomed the integration of modern technology in policing. From surveillance drones and AI-driven crime data analysis to biometric verification and digital case tracking, technology is being increasingly deployed to:

  • Prevent crime more efficiently
  • Respond to emergencies more rapidly
  • Secure public spaces
  • Ensure transparency and accountability

“The use of modern technology in policing for the establishment of public peace and order and effective prevention of crimes is welcome,” he said, adding that these steps are making citizen safety more effective, reliable, and assured.

A Trusted Ally in Crises: Police Role Beyond Crime-Fighting

Disaster Response and Public Service

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif acknowledged that the role of the police goes far beyond routine law enforcement. Whether during natural disasters, floods, earthquakes, or public emergencies, the police are often among the first responders on the scene, rescuing victims, coordinating relief efforts, and maintaining civic order.

He praised their collaboration with other security forces such as the Pakistan Army and Rangers, especially during critical operations and emergencies.

Anti-Terrorism Forces Across Provinces

The Prime Minister also highlighted the key role the police played in the creation and functioning of anti-terrorism forces across Pakistan’s four provinces. These units have carried out joint operations, cracked down on extremist networks, and secured sensitive installations, thereby significantly improving the security environment.

Public Perception and Reforms: Restoring Trust in Law Enforcement

A Changing Narrative: Police and Public Engagement

Prime Minister Sharif acknowledged the gradual improvement in the public’s perception of the police. Historically, police forces in Pakistan have faced criticism for inefficiency, corruption, and lack of accountability. However, over the past several years, sustained reforms, training initiatives, and public outreach programs have helped change this image.

According to the Prime Minister, increased professionalism and visible success in operations have led to greater public trust and higher morale within the police force.

Reforming the System: Challenges and Achievements

Reforming police departments across the country has been a longstanding challenge, involving issues such as:

  • Political interference
  • Underfunding and lack of resources
  • Outdated laws and procedures
  • Inadequate training and facilities

However, several provincial governments have launched reform initiatives including:

  • The Punjab Safe Cities Authority
  • Introduction of e-policing and smart reporting systems
  • Establishment of model police stations
  • Mandatory training in human rights and community policing

The federal government under Shehbaz Sharif has also prioritized capacity-building and digital transformation of the police.

Geographic Reach: Protecting Every Corner of Pakistan

From Gwadar to Gilgit-Baltistan: A National Mission

In one of the most evocative statements of his speech, the Prime Minister said:
“From the shores of Gwadar to the mountains of Gilgit-Baltistan, every police officer assigned to protect the country is the pride of the entire nation.”

This statement reflects the national scope and inclusivity of Pakistan’s police force. Officers are stationed across the length and breadth of the country—whether in the Balochistan desert, the tribal frontiers of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the urban centers of Karachi and Lahore, or the remote valleys of Azad Jammu & Kashmir—risking their lives in the service of the state.

Looking Ahead: Building a Safer, Stronger Pakistan

Prime Minister’s Commitment to Police Welfare

Prime Minister Sharif concluded his message by reaffirming the government’s commitment to police welfare, including:

  • Martyrs’ compensation packages
  • Free education and housing for martyrs’ families
  • Health insurance and risk allowances
  • Upgrading training facilities and tactical equipment

He emphasized that the bravery and sacrifice of the police must be matched by the state’s responsibility to care for them and their families.

Conclusion: A Tribute Etched in National Memory

On Police Martyrs’ Day, Pakistan salutes its fallen heroes, acknowledges the service of its current officers, and recommits to building a more secure, just, and peaceful society.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s message is a reminder of the enduring bond between the state and those who defend it, often in silence and sacrifice. It is also a call to action for institutional support, community engagement, and lasting reform in the country’s law enforcement sector.

As the Prime Minister eloquently stated, “every police officer is the pride of the nation”—a sentiment that resonates far beyond today and into the collective conscience of a grateful country.
