ZURICH: More than 3,600 chemicals enter food products during the packaging process, a new study has revealed.
Recent research has shown that 79 of these chemicals cause cancer, genetic mutations, and endocrine and reproductive problems.
An international team of researchers has published their report in the Journal of Exposure Science and Environmental Epidemiology.
“Our research shows a link between food-interacting chemicals and human exposure to them,” said lead study author Bridget Gewke.
Additionally, our research highlights chemicals that are overlooked in biomonitoring studies and supports further research into safe food contact materials.
“This is a staggering number and shows that these chemicals in food are an important source of chemicals in humans,” he said.
