LONDON: A recent study has revealed that young people who commit suicide have no pre-existing mental health effects.
Suicide is the leading cause of death among young people in the United States, and new research suggests that the majority of young people who die by suicide do not report any mental health problems in their medical history.
According to the study, published in the journal JAMA Open Network, 3 out of 5 young people who died by suicide between January 2010 and December 2021 had no prior diagnosis of mental illness.
The above findings show that mental health problems among youth today are under-diagnosed and thus under-treated.
The new study included data from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Violent Death Reporting System on people ages 10 to 24 and included more than 40,000 suicides.
