This lucky actress was Devika Rani, who was born on March 30, 1908, in a civilized family in Bengal, and was a prominent face in the history of the Indian film industry.
She was the granddaughter of Rabindranath Tagore’s sister Sukumari Devi and the daughter of India’s first Surgeon General, Colonel MN Chaudhary. Devika studied fashion designing and started her artistic career in London.

In 1928, she met filmmaker Himanshu Roy, who introduced her to Indian films. In 1932, the two made the film Karam together, which was released in both English and Hindi and was a global success.
Devika Rani played a prominent role in Bombay Talkies and acted in several classic films such as Achoot Kanya, Savitri and Prem Kahani. She was associated with Bombay Talkies, which paved the way for the Indian film industry.
After Himanshu Roy’s death, Devika Rani took over Bombay Talkies and introduced new talent such as Madhubala and Dilip Kumar. Her film Kismat set new box office records.
Devika Rani later married Russian artist Sovetov Slavo Rorukh and settled in Bangalore.
He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1958 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1970. He died on 9 March 1994 at the age of 87, and his contribution to the Indian film industry will always be remembered.
