The largest male funnel web spider ever recorded, measuring 3.6 inches, was recently donated to an Australian zoo.
A male funnel web spider is so large that its fangs can pierce through human fingernails and deliver its deadly venom into the skin.
Zoo staff said the giant funnel web spider, named Hemsworth, was recently donated to the Australian Reptile Park and could play a key role in the zoo’s anti-venom program.
Funnel web spiders are the most venomous spiders in the world. If left untreated, a single bite can kill a small child within 15 minutes and an adult within three days.
The spider was caught by a citizen who later donated it to the Australian Reptile Park. The zoo encourages donations to support its spider venom program which produces life-saving antivenom against Sydney funnel web spider and other spider bites.
