COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s newly elected president Anura Kumara Dissanayake dissolved parliament a day after taking office to pave the way for parliamentary elections scheduled for November.
The Sri Lankan government has issued a gazette notification, according to which President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has dissolved Parliament as the country will hold parliamentary elections on November 14 and the next parliament will begin its session on November 21, Reuters reported. will
The last general election in Sri Lanka was held in August 2020 where members of the assembly are elected for a 5-year term.
It should be noted that Anura Kumara Dissanayake won the presidential election in Sri Lanka two days ago, while his National People’s Party had only 3 members out of 225 in the current parliament, due to which he got a new mandate for his policies. Parliament was dissolved.
Sri Lanka’s first presidential election of the 2022 economic disaster was held on Saturday, followed by parliamentary elections in November, but new president Anura Kumara Dissanayake will take major steps to improve the economy.
He had said before the election that he would fulfill the conditions required to obtain 2.9 billion dollars from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) so that the economic crisis would be controlled and welfare works would also be done.
