Islamabad:Federal Minister for National Food Security & Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, met with a delegation from the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC) today. The delegation was led by ICAC Executive Director, Eric Trachtenberg, and included key representatives from the cotton and textile sectors.During the meeting, Federal Minister for National Food Security & Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, discussed Pakistan’s cotton production, trade, and textile sector development with the ICAC delegation.
He emphasized the importance of sustainable cotton production and expanding market access through collaboration with ICAC.Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain highlighted Pakistan’s offer to host the 84th ICAC Plenary Meeting, reaffirming the government’s full support in organizing a successful event. He noted that Pakistan is the 5th largest cotton producer globally and ranks 3rd in Better Cotton production, while cotton contributes 0.7% to Pakistan’s GDP and 2.9% to the value added agriculture.The meeting also addressed challenges in the cotton industry, including climate change, low yields, pest infestations, and shrinking cultivated areas. Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain, stressed the need for modernizing seed technology, ginning processes, and textile advancements to enhance Pakistan’s global competitiveness.The government is actively working on policy reforms and tax relief for cotton farmers, including reviewing the 18% GST on local cotton to create a fairer market environment.Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain also announced the National Cotton Revival Conference, scheduled for February 4, 2025, in Multan, where key stakeholders will discuss strategies for enhancing cotton productivity and trade.The Federal Minister reiterated that the Ministry of National Food Security & Research remains committed to enhancing cotton production, supporting farmers, and implementing sustainable agricultural practices. The government will continue working closely with international partners like ICAC to strengthen Pakistan’s position in the global cotton market and ensure long-term growth in the sector.
