Punjab Unveils ‘Apni Chhat, Mahfooz Chhat’ Safe Housing Scheme

LAHORE: The Punjab government has unveiled the “Apni Chhat, Mahfooz Chhat” initiative, a housing support program designed to help low-income families build safer and more secure homes across the province.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif announced the project as part of the government’s broader efforts to improve living standards and provide housing assistance to vulnerable segments of society. The initiative aims to reduce the financial burden on families that struggle to afford home construction or renovation.
Under the scheme, eligible applicants will receive an interest-free loan of Rs500,000 for the construction or improvement of their homes. The amount will be repayable through affordable monthly installments of approximately Rs4,700 over a period of nine years, making home ownership more accessible for lower-income households.
The program also addresses the needs of extended families living together under one roof. Households accommodating multiple families will be eligible for interest-free financing of up to Rs1 million to construct additional rooms or add another floor to their existing homes.
Speaking at the launch, the Chief Minister emphasized that access to safe housing is essential for the well-being and dignity of families. She noted that the government is committed to ensuring that families are not forced to live in unsafe structures that could endanger lives during natural disasters or structural failures.
The “Apni Chhat, Mahfooz Chhat” initiative is expected to benefit thousands of families throughout Punjab and contribute to improved housing conditions, stronger communities, and enhanced social welfare in the province.
