PM Apna Ghar Program Gains Massive Response from Homeless Families Across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

PESHAWAR: The Prime Minister’s Apna Ghar Program (Ghar Ho Tu Apna) is witnessing an overwhelming response from homeless and low-income families across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as thousands seek affordable housing finance to fulfill their dream of owning a home.

The initiative has attracted applications from salaried employees, pensioners, and middle-income households who have struggled for years with rising rents, soaring property prices, and inflation. With home ownership becoming increasingly difficult, the federal government’s subsidized housing finance scheme is being viewed as a significant relief for deserving families.

Housing experts say Pakistan’s growing population—now exceeding 241.5 million—has intensified the country’s housing shortage, particularly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where millions of additional housing units are needed to meet demand.

Retired school teacher Riazul Haq from Peshawar described the program as a lifeline for families burdened by increasing rental costs.

“A house is not just bricks and cement. It is peace of mind, security for children and respect for a family,” he said.

Public-sector employee Nasir Ali also praised the initiative, noting that affordable financing of up to Rs10 million has encouraged many middle-income families to apply.

Former Chairman of the Economics Department at the University of Peshawar, Professor Dr. Naeemur Rehman Khattak, emphasized that affordable housing is a fundamental human need that strengthens family stability, improves educational opportunities, and enhances overall social welfare. He urged eligible citizens to take advantage of the government’s housing initiative.

Under the Apna Ghar Program, eligible applicants can obtain financing for houses of up to 10 marla or apartments measuring 1,500 square feet, with loans of up to Rs10 million. Borrowers benefit from a fixed 5% markup, while the federal government subsidizes the remaining markup for the first 10 years. The financing period extends up to 20 years, with no processing fees or prepayment penalties.

Applications are being accepted through commercial banks, Islamic banks, microfinance banks, and the House Building Finance Company Limited (HBFCL).

According to officials from the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), participating financial institutions have approved Rs204 billion in housing finance, while Rs27 billion has already been disbursed under the scheme.

Officials from the Provincial Housing Authority (PHA) said several housing projects are also progressing across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, including Hangu Township, Jalozai Phase-III, affordable apartments in Peshawar, a residential tower in Nishtarabad, and the Surizai Housing Scheme.

Experts believe the combination of subsidized federal housing finance and provincial development projects will help reduce the province’s housing deficit while improving the quality of life for thousands of deserving families.
