Pakistani Convention 2025 honours its global citizens in building trust, boosting remittances, and launching diaspora-friendly reforms.
Pakistani Convention 2025:
History was made at the 2025 Overseas Pakistani Convention, which took place in Islamabad from April 13 to 15. This is the first time that a gathering this size has been organised especially to recognise and interact with Pakistanis living abroad. The ceremony, which was coordinated by the Overseas Pakistanis Foundation (OPF) with full government assistance, sent a strong message that Pakistan recognizes and values its international family.
Heart of the Nation Abroad:
There are more than 9 million Pakistanis who live and work abroad. They send billions of dollars in remittances each year, support their families, invest in property and business, and proudly represent Pakistan’s culture and values. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif praised this patriotic community, highlighting a 30% increase in remittances, reaching $17.8 billion in just the first half of the 2024-25 fiscal year. He called them the “economic backbone” of Pakistan, emphasizing that their consistent financial support helped the country during tough times like economic crises and natural disasters.
Grand Welcome for Overseas Guests:
Pakistanis residing overseas who attended the occasion were given full state hospitality. Ministries of the government, such as those in charge of immigration, real estate, investments, and education, erect booths to hear the worries of guests and offer prompt assistance. Just the fact that attendees were treated like state guests contributed to the development of emotional trust between the government and foreign nationals. This was a homecoming, not merely a convention.
Reintroduction of the Green Channel:
One of the biggest announcements made during the convention was the restoration of the Green Channel for overseas Pakistanis at airports. This will now allow them to go through immigration and customs much faster, without unnecessary delays or scrutiny. This move was highly appreciated by attendees, as it solved a long-standing complaint from expats who often felt mistreated at arrival terminals.
Direct Engagement with Ministries:
More than 20 federal departments were present at the event. From FBR (for taxation concerns) to NADRA, property registrars, and investment boards, overseas Pakistanis had a chance to speak directly to officials. Complaints were noted, suggestions were welcomed, and in many cases, solutions were offered on the spot. This one-on-one connection is what made the convention different from previous initiatives, which were often just symbolic.
Recognition of Overseas Heroes:
The recognition of Pakistanis living abroad who have contributed to the nation’s pride was another noteworthy event. For their worldwide accomplishments, philanthropists, doctors, educators, IT specialists, and entrepreneurs were honoured. In addition to granting them the title of Ambassador at Large, the government suggested issuing them blue diplomatic passports so they could travel abroad. This effectively conveyed the message that “you are not just Pakistani by birth, but by honour.”
Bridging the Gap Through Policy:
The government showed a clear intention to take overseas concerns seriously. For example:
- Property issues: Many attendees from Europe and the Middle East shared concerns about illegal property grabs back home. Officials promised better complaint systems and quicker court processes.
- Investment barriers: Expats with money to invest often face red tape. The Board of Investment announced easier procedures and new incentives for diaspora investors.
- Youth Engagement: Overseas youth, especially those born abroad, often feel disconnected. Programs are now being planned to promote heritage education, internships, and cultural exchange visits.
Permanent Annual Feature:
Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Chaudhry Salik Hussain confirmed that this is not a one-time effort. The Overseas Pakistani Convention will now be held annually, ensuring consistent dialogue between the diaspora and the state. He also strongly criticised those who tried to politicize or undermine the event. “This convention is not political. It is national,” he stated. “And it’s time we stop listening to those who want to divide us.”
Cultural Pride and Personal Stories:
Beyond politics and policies, the convention also celebrated culture. There were music performances, art displays, and food stalls representing different regions of Pakistan. Overseas guests shared emotional stories of their migration, success abroad, and ongoing love for Pakistan. One attendee from Canada said, “I left Pakistan 30 years ago, but my heart never left. Today, Pakistan has called me back, and I feel respected.”
Fighting Negativity with Reality:
On social media, some unfavourable voices attempted to disseminate false information by claiming that the event was a financial waste. The majority of attendees, however, covered their own travel and accommodation costs. Many remained with the family, demonstrating how strongly they still feel a connection to their heritage. In a forceful response, government representatives said that funding Pakistanis abroad is an investment in Pakistan’s future. It’s about long-term relationships, progress, and trust.
Step Toward a Brighter Future:
The convention clearly outlined the next steps:
- Digital communication hubs will be created in embassies to assist overseas Pakistanis in real-time.
- A diaspora advisory council will be formed to consult on key policy issues.
- Overseas education and job portals will be launched to help Pakistani youth connect with global mentors and career paths.
This is not just a dream, it is a new direction for Pakistan, powered by its citizens living around the world.
United Pakistan Beyond Borders:
The 2025 Overseas Pakistani Convention was more than just a gathering. It served as a pledge of inclusivity, a token of appreciation, and a symbol of solidarity. Pakistanis living abroad have been sending love, money, and ideas home for decades. Pakistan is now at last returning with open arms, opportunity, and respect. The message was clear as the conference came to an end. “Regardless of where we reside, we are a single nation. We shall work together to create a more powerful and stable Pakistan.
