JD Vance Stays Neutral on Netanyahu as Israeli Elections Approach

WASHINGTON, October 21, 2026: US Vice President JD Vance has opted not to endorse Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of Israel’s upcoming parliamentary elections, distancing himself from President Donald Trump’s public support for the Israeli leader.

According to Agence France-Presse (AFP), Vance made the remarks during an interview with journalist Mark Halperin on Monday. He clarified that he was neither campaigning against Netanyahu nor backing him, stressing that he did not intend to interfere in Israel’s electoral process.

Vance said his political support was reserved for American candidates, adding that his primary focus was on the upcoming US midterm elections.

His position contrasts with Trump’s approach. The US president publicly endorsed Netanyahu on Sunday, ahead of the Israeli parliamentary elections scheduled for October 27.

Vance’s Neutrality Contrasts With Previous Political Interventions

The vice president’s decision to remain neutral on Israel’s elections marks a contrast with his previous involvement in European politics.

In April, Vance travelled to Budapest shortly before Hungary’s parliamentary elections to support then-Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. He has also voiced support for Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

Vance is frequently discussed as a potential Republican presidential contender in the next US election cycle. However, he has not formally declared a presidential bid.

Iran Conflict Remains a Point of Political Debate

Vance’s position on Netanyahu also comes against the backdrop of disagreements over the conflict involving Iran.

According to the report, Vance initially opposed launching the US-Israeli war against Iran but subsequently defended the military campaign.

In June, he responded sharply to Israeli officials who criticised a short-lived ceasefire between Washington and Tehran. Vance argued at the time that Trump was the only head of state demonstrating sympathy towards Israel under the circumstances.

He also warned Israeli officials to exercise caution when criticising the United States, highlighting the importance of maintaining ties with Washington.

Vance’s latest comments indicate that he intends to avoid direct involvement in Israel’s electoral contest, even as Trump openly backs Netanyahu. The differing approaches underscore a distinction between the president’s public endorsement and the vice president’s stated position of neutrality.
