Iranian President Masoud Peshmerga has called for an end to Israel’s occupation of Syrian territories since the fall of Bashar al-Assad.
The Iranian president’s statement came during a visit to Tehran by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammad Shia al-Sudani, where they discussed issues such as trade, cooperation and recent developments in Syria.
Masoud Peshmerga said in a press briefing with Shia al-Sudani that “the Zionist regime needs to withdraw from the occupied territories and respect religious sentiments, especially concerns about Shia holy sites and shrines.”
The Iranian president also warned of the reactivation of terrorist groups in Syria.
It should be noted that last month, rebel forces led by the Islamist group Hayat Tahrir al-Sham captured the capital Damascus after a stormy offensive and Bashar al-Assad fled.
Since the fall of his government, Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes on Syrian territory, claiming that the attacks are aimed at preventing strategic weapons from falling into enemy hands.
Israeli troops have also occupied strategic positions in the UN buffer zone separating Syrian-controlled territory and the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Iran has condemned Israel’s land grab in Syria and demanded its withdrawal.
