Cristiano Ronaldo’s dream of winning the FIFA World Cup came to a heartbreaking end after Portugal suffered a 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain in the Round of 16.

Spain booked their place in the quarter-finals thanks to a decisive goal from Mikel Merino in extra time. Following the final whistle, the 41-year-old Portuguese captain was overcome with emotion and was seen in tears as his World Cup journey appeared to reach its conclusion.

Before the tournament, Ronaldo had revealed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup would likely be the final international competition of his illustrious career. However, after Portugal’s elimination, he said he would discuss his future with his family before making a final decision regarding his international retirement.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner leaves the World Cup with another remarkable milestone, becoming the only footballer to score in six different FIFA World Cups. Across his legendary career, Ronaldo has scored 976 goals for club and country, further cementing his place among football’s greatest players.

Despite his extraordinary achievements, the World Cup trophy remained the one major honour missing from his collection. Portugal’s best World Cup finish under Ronaldo came in 2006 when the team reached the semi-finals.

During the 2026 tournament, Ronaldo’s role in the squad became a topic of debate. Critics questioned his continued place in the starting lineup, arguing that Portugal possessed a wealth of young attacking talent, including Gonçalo Ramos, Bruno Fernandes, Vitinha, João Neves and Nuno Mendes. Although Ronaldo scored three goals during the tournament, his overall performances drew mixed reviews.

Following Portugal’s exit, head coach Roberto Martínez also announced his resignation. He paid tribute to Ronaldo, describing him as one of football’s greatest icons and praising his dedication, professionalism and determination to bring the World Cup to Portugal. Martínez added that Ronaldo’s commitment and work ethic would continue to inspire future generations of footballers.
