Russia Steps In With Mediation Offer Amid Rising Saudi-Houthi Tensions
MOSCOW: Russia has offered to mediate amid rising tensions between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi movement, as attacks on Saudi territory raise fresh concerns about stability across the Middle East.
The offer was made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov during a meeting in Moscow with Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud. Lavrov said Moscow was closely monitoring developments in the region and was prepared to contribute to efforts aimed at easing tensions and restoring stability.
The meeting also focused on the latest escalation between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis. Saudi Arabia reiterated its determination to defend its territory, while the Russian foreign minister described Houthi attacks against the kingdom as unacceptable.
The diplomatic development comes after attacks reportedly targeted the Saudi cities of Abha, Khamis Mushait, Najran and Jazan using drones and missiles. At least 73 people were reported injured, while fires broke out at important energy facilities and some installations, including the Jazan oil refinery, were reportedly affected.
The renewed escalation is raising concerns over the wider security situation in the region, particularly following a period of relative calm after the 2022 ceasefire in Yemen.
Russia maintains diplomatic ties with both Saudi Arabia and Iran, giving Moscow channels of communication with key regional players. Riyadh and Moscow have also maintained close cooperation on political and economic issues, particularly in the energy sector.
During the meeting, Prince Faisal expressed Saudi Arabia’s interest in further strengthening cooperation with Russia. He said coordination between the two countries contributes to stability in global energy markets by helping balance oil supply and demand.
The latest developments are also unfolding against the backdrop of heightened tensions affecting major regional shipping routes. Disruptions to energy transportation have increased concerns in global markets, with Brent crude reportedly approaching $99 per barrel.
The situation has added further pressure on international efforts to prevent the conflict from spreading across the region. Russia’s mediation proposal could provide another diplomatic channel if the parties become willing to pursue negotiations.
For Moscow, maintaining dialogue with Saudi Arabia while preserving its relationship with Iran gives it a potentially important diplomatic position as Middle Eastern tensions continue to intensify.
