PM Shehbaz, Iranian President Pezeshkian Meet in Bishkek, Push for Peace and Stronger Ties
BISHKEK, August 31, 2026: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian held talks on Monday on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of State meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic, focusing on bilateral relations, regional connectivity and efforts to promote peace.
The meeting underscored the longstanding and close relationship between Pakistan and Iran, with both leaders reaffirming their commitment to expanding cooperation across areas of mutual interest.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif stressed the importance of implementing understandings reached during President Pezeshkian’s visit to Pakistan in June this year. The two sides also reviewed initiatives aimed at improving regional connectivity and strengthening people-to-people contacts.
Regional developments were also discussed during the meeting. Prime Minister Shehbaz reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to sincere diplomatic efforts for regional peace and stability, while highlighting the recent visit of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir to Tehran and his constructive engagements as a positive development.
The prime minister called for restraint and sustained diplomatic engagement, emphasizing that dialogue remained essential for achieving lasting peace and stability in the region.
He also stressed the importance of building upon the understandings reached under the Islamabad MoU, describing them as a viable pathway toward durable regional peace.
President Pezeshkian appreciated Pakistan’s continued diplomatic efforts for peace and security and reaffirmed Iran’s desire to deepen cooperation with Pakistan in multiple sectors.
The Iranian president highlighted the deep historical, cultural and religious bonds between the two countries and called for greater unity among the Muslim Ummah to address contemporary challenges.
The meeting was attended by Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Syed Tariq Fatemi and Foreign Secretary Ambassador Amna Baloch. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and other senior officials also participated.
