West Indies’ World Cup Nightmare Continues as Direct Qualification Slips Away
Two-time former world champions West Indies have failed to secure direct qualification for the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup and will now have to battle through the qualifier stage in February.
Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, England, Bangladesh, South Africa and Zimbabwe have secured their places in the tournament, while Afghanistan also sealed direct qualification after defeating Ireland in Belfast.
West Indies, currently placed 10th, will face India in two remaining ODIs before the September 30 cut-off date. However, even victories in both matches will not be enough to earn them a direct spot.
The Caribbean side will therefore enter the World Cup qualifiers for the second consecutive time, having also missed direct qualification for the 2023 World Cup.
The February qualifiers will offer another route to the tournament. The winner will qualify directly for the second round, while the teams finishing second, third and fourth will compete in a Super Series. The Super Series winner will also advance to the second round.
West Indies’ latest setback marks another difficult chapter for one of international cricket’s most historic teams.
