If the Current House is Fake, Then Isn't the Chairman of the Standing Committee Illegal? – Ayaz Sadiq

Islamabad: Ayaz Sadiq Challenges PTI’s Allegations Against the National Assembly

Speaker of the National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, has responded to the allegations made by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) regarding the legitimacy of the current National Assembly. He questioned the logic behind PTI’s claims, asking that if the House is deemed fake, then would that not also render the Chairman of the Standing Committee illegal?

Ayaz Sadiq Defends the Integrity of the Assembly

While addressing the media in Islamabad, Ayaz Sadiq criticized PTI for its contradictory stance regarding the National Assembly. He pointed out that while PTI members call the House illegal, they continue to participate in parliamentary proceedings, hold positions, and leverage parliamentary privileges when convenient.

“If the National Assembly is fake, then logically, the Chairmen of its Standing Committees, many of whom were appointed by PTI members, should also be considered illegitimate,” Sadiq remarked. “This kind of double standard only serves to confuse the public and discredit the democratic process.”

Proud to Be Called a ‘Havaldar’

In response to political jabs referring to him as a “Havaldar” (Sergeant), Ayaz Sadiq took the label in stride. He stated that he considers it an honor, highlighting the distinction between two types of Havaldars—those who uphold law and order by catching thieves and those who achieve martyrdom in the line of duty.

“I am proud if I am called a Havaldar,” he said. “One category of Havaldars is responsible for maintaining law and order, while the other sacrifices their life for a greater cause. If my role in upholding democracy and ensuring discipline in parliamentary proceedings classifies me as a Havaldar, then so be it.”

Contradictions in PTI’s Claims

Ayaz Sadiq also called out PTI leader Omar Ayub for making contradictory claims regarding his right to speak in the House. He pointed out that Omar Ayub alleged he was not given a chance to speak, yet he proceeded to deliver a speech lasting an hour and a half.

“This is a blatant contradiction,” Sadiq stated. “He claims his questions are ignored, but the parliamentary record shows otherwise. The reality is that he does not attend sessions regularly, which results in his attention notices being dropped. How can one expect to participate meaningfully if they do not fulfill their parliamentary responsibilities?”

New Approach to Parliamentary Proceedings

Ayaz Sadiq announced that he would now enforce stricter adherence to parliamentary rules. Under this new approach, he would allow one opposition member to speak after two government members.

“Clapping is done with both hands,” he remarked. “If opposition members refuse to participate constructively and only engage in protests, they will naturally receive fewer opportunities to present their views. Parliamentary discussions should be based on participation, not disruption.”

Following Established Precedents

The Speaker also stated that he would follow the precedents set by PTI itself. He referenced past instances where PTI leaders used their authority to issue production orders or impose strict disciplinary measures. If PTI insists on questioning current government actions, they must acknowledge their own past decisions.

“I will now follow the very traditions they established,” Sadiq said. “If they issued production orders in a certain way, we will do the same. If they took harsh steps, we will not hesitate to repeat them.”

Possibility of Political Dialogues

Despite political tensions, Ayaz Sadiq expressed hope for dialogue between the government and the opposition. However, he emphasized that such talks should not revolve around the interests of a single individual but should focus on national issues.

“We are open to discussions,” he stated. “But negotiations should not be about protecting one person’s interests. The government was ready to respond to the opposition’s concerns, but the opposition was directed to halt talks. They cannot even specify the kind of meeting they want.”

This statement highlights the deadlock between political factions, where a lack of clarity from the opposition is preventing constructive dialogue.

Call for Climate Action

Shifting focus to a non-political issue, Ayaz Sadiq stressed the importance of environmental conservation. He highlighted the necessity of tree plantation efforts to combat climate change, particularly as Pakistan faces severe environmental challenges.

“The need to plant trees is critical in the fight against climate change,” he stated. “For every tree cut down, we must plant another in its place. This initiative by the Prime Minister, in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior and the Capital Development Authority (CDA), is commendable.”

His remarks underscored the government’s commitment to sustainability and its ongoing efforts to address environmental concerns through afforestation programs.

The Broader Political Implications

Ayaz Sadiq’s statements reflect the broader political tensions in Pakistan. The ongoing rift between PTI and the ruling coalition continues to shape parliamentary proceedings, often resulting in gridlock. The allegations of an “illegal” National Assembly are part of a larger narrative where opposition parties challenge the legitimacy of the current government.

Political analysts suggest that such debates, while part of democratic discourse, should not overshadow pressing national issues. With Pakistan facing economic challenges, security concerns, and climate threats, political stability is crucial for progress.

Strengthening Parliamentary Integrity

As Speaker of the National Assembly, Ayaz Sadiq’s role is to ensure fair and orderly proceedings. His recent remarks indicate a shift towards stricter enforcement of parliamentary rules to prevent disorder and ensure meaningful debates.

Experts argue that all political stakeholders must recognize the importance of parliamentary institutions and work towards strengthening democratic processes rather than undermining them through conflicting narratives.

Conclusion: The Need for Constructive Political Engagement

The ongoing tensions between the government and opposition underscore the need for mature and constructive political engagement. While Ayaz Sadiq’s statements highlight the inconsistencies in PTI’s approach, they also serve as a reminder that political debates should be based on factual discussions rather than contradictions.

As Pakistan navigates complex challenges, both political sides must find common ground to ensure that parliamentary proceedings remain productive. Whether through fair debates, dialogue, or structured legislative processes, the focus should remain on governance, national stability, and the well-being of Pakistani citizens.

The future of Pakistan’s democracy depends on the ability of its leaders to rise above partisan conflicts and work towards solutions that benefit the country as a whole. In this context, Ayaz Sadiq’s call for accountability, rule-based governance, and environmental responsibility sets a precedent for responsible leadership in the face of political turbulence.
