Pakistan Muslim League (N) President Nawaz Sharif has expressed regret that the talks between the government and the opposition were fruitless due to the inflexible and unserious attitude of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
In a meeting with Speaker National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, the PML-N president said that you, as the guardian of the house, facilitated the talks between the government and the opposition, however, due to the lack of seriousness of the PTI, these talks could not prove fruitful.
Indirectly referring to the PTI, Nawaz Sharif said that the people are not interested in protests and sloganeering, but they want their important issues to be resolved.
The meeting emphasized the importance of parliamentary supremacy, effective legislation in the public interest and strengthening democracy.
Nawaz Sharif stressed that a strong parliament is necessary to ensure political stability and the welfare of the people.
He praised Sadiq for conducting the proceedings of the House fairly despite the opposition’s protests.
During the meeting, the Speaker National Assembly briefed the ruling party President about the ongoing session of the National Assembly, the legislative process, important parliamentary developments and the performance of the 16th National Assembly during its first parliamentary year.
The meeting also discussed the future strategy and legislative agenda of the PML-N.
The talks between the government and the opposition ended a month ago when the opposition accused the PML-N of not following through on its demand to form a judicial commission to investigate the violent incidents of May 9 and November 26.
However, jailed PTI founder Imran Khan had expressed his willingness to talk to the military establishment in the best interest of the country, claiming that it (the establishment) has control over all matters, while all others are mere puppets.
He also reiterated his demand for the formation of a judicial commission comprising senior Supreme Court judges to investigate the incidents of May 9 and November 26.
