There are 54 rivers flowing between Bangladesh and India and the Indian government has built dams on all of them which generate electricity.
But when India stops water in dams on the pretext of force, Bangladeshi farmers do not get the required water to irrigate their lands. Crops dry up and all the hard work is wasted.
In the absence of rains, the Modi government again stopped water in most of the dams, over which millions of farmers in Bangladesh are holding anti-India protests.
The Teesta River alone, which comes from India, used to irrigate “one and a half million hectares” of agricultural land in Bangladesh. Bangladesh wants to build an agriculture-friendly Teesta project with financial support from China, but the Modi government is creating obstacles by calling it a security threat.
Addressing the protesters, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhar-ul-Salam said that India was generating electricity by building dams on rivers and our farmers and fishermen were dying.
He further said that the Modi government has also kept the fugitive fascist Begum Hasina in the palace from where she issues royal orders. If India is a friend of Bangladesh, then she should give up her authoritarian ways. The issue of water distribution is becoming serious.
