Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain Meets Rice Exporters in Karachi

Karachi: Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, met with members of the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) in Karachi today. Speaking on the occasion, the minister assured the exporters of the government’s full support, saying, “The Prime Minister and the entire government stand with the business community. When you thrive, it benefits the economy and reaches the labor force.”Expressing concern over disruptions in rice exports, Rana Tanveer Hussain emphasized that the European Union is highly sensitive regarding quality standards and has issued warnings about halting imports. “We need to address these issues proactively to ensure smooth exports,” he urged.Earlier, rice exporters raised concerns with the minister about undue pressure from government institutions, including repeated calls for years-old records and being summoned to offices for unnecessary meetings, which is causing anxiety in the business community.The minister acknowledged their concerns and assured them that they are a valuable asset to the nation. “You are respected and vital for the country’s economy. We have already directed the FIA to avoid unnecessary contact with the business community. However, it is your responsibility to ensure the export of high-quality products that enhance the country’s reputation,” he stated. Rana Tanveer Hussain also urged exporters to adapt to modern technologies and upgrade their systems to stay competitive in the global market.During the meeting, rice exporters requested the government to grant the rice export sector the status of an industry, highlighting that exports have reached $2-4 billion. They also demanded permission for weighbridges at ports or negotiations with commercial weighbridge operators for concessional rates.
