WASHINGTON DC: The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says a severe solar storm is heading toward Earth that could affect power grids more than a succession of recent storms. .
The agency’s warning of a severe geomagnetic storm comes after it observed a burst of energy from the sun earlier this week. Such a storm can temporarily disrupt power and radio signals.
NOAA has warned operators of power plants and Earth-orbiting spacecraft to take precautions.
The agency has also alerted the Federal Emergency Management Agency of potential power outages.
According to experts, this solar storm will not be more intense than the storm that hit the Earth in May (which was the strongest storm in more than two decades). But they won’t know until the storm gets within a million miles of the spacecraft measuring it.
