WASHINGTON: Recently, researchers have suggested that the outer edge of our Milky Way Galaxy is expanding further into the vastness of space and touching its nearest neighbor, the Andromeda Galaxy.
A paper published in the journal Nature Astronomy details that an international team of scientists offers a new definition for the boundary between interstellar space and the “circumgalactic medium (CGM).” Galaxies are surrounded by clouds of gas.
Until now, this bubble of gas has been of interest to scientists, who have led them to study it by analyzing the light absorbed by a celestial phenomenon such as a quasar.
Previous Hubble telescope observations predicted that the Milky Way galaxy would collide with Andromeda in four billion years.
However, the latest data suggests that the conflict has technically already begun.
